Mid-grade elk is a great option to save a few bucks but still have a really good product. When we buy antlers, it’s done in 3 grades of antler. A grade (premium) B grade (mid-grade) and C grade (economy) The mid-grade line are usually freshly found with-in one year of the elk dropping them so they are typically premium grade on one side and economy on the other. This level of weathering doesn't degrade the antler too extensively and allows the dog to have a great product at a more reasonable price.

Quality information
I buy antlers in 3 qualities. For Black Hills Antlers that translates to 3 qualities of dog chews. The differences in qualities generally has to do with how weathered they are which determines how long they will last. Picking the right chew can be tricky sometimes. Here is a simple guide to help.
Economy - The most weathered, cracks on both sides, can have more of a mess but similar to other consumable dog chews. Antlers in this quality have the most variability in how strong they are and how long they last.
Mid-grade - Cracking on one side of the antler and none on the other. Contains most of the integrity of the antler but may have variability in each piece.
Premium - Freshly picked up antler, all naturally polished antler, the strongest option
Species information
Elk - Generally softer than deer but one of the many dogs favorites. Elk may be sold as whole or split. Many elk options can stand up to the toughest chewers. Elk antler is more dense at the base and gets less dense as it goes up.
Deer - We sell mule deer and whitetail in the same listings. Mule deer can sometimes be softer than whitetail but in general deer are tougher than elk and premium deer is the toughest we sell.
Cut Information
Whole antlers - The longest-lasting option for aggressive chewers. Because the antler is left intact, dogs must work the exterior surface to access the marrow, making it a durable chew that can keep them occupied for extended periods.
Split antlers - Cut lengthwise to expose the nutrient-rich marrow inside. This makes them easier for dogs to access and enjoy, while also helping scrape and clean their teeth. They’re a favorite for many dogs, though they typically don’t last as long as whole antlers.
